Photonic sensors and instrumentation 2 (SINFOTON 2)

Photonic sensors and instrumentation 2 (SINFOTON 2) is a programme of Research and Development Activities among research groups in the Comunidad de Madrid (CM) funded by the Comunidad de Madrid Government in the “Tecnologías 2018” call, and co-funded with European Structural Funds.

 

SINFOTON originates in the preceding SINFOTON-CM (S2013/MIT2790), FACTOTEM–CM (S2005/ESP-0417) and FACTOTEM2-CM (S2009/ESP-1781) programmes, aiming at developing instrumentation systems and sensors based on photonics.

 

Those three previous programmes strengthened the capacities of the groups involved, catalysing their successful participation in some competitive International Excellence Programmes, as well as their close collaboration with CM-based companies, and has led to the creation of four high tech spin-off companies (FOCUS S.L, APTENT S.L, ALISE DEVICES S.L, ALCYON SL). The consortium consists of 4 groups from Madrilenian public Universities (U. Carlos III de Madrid, U. Politécnica de Madrid, U. Alcalá, U. Rey Juan Carlos), 1 group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), and 3 laboratories ascribed to the Madrid Region Laboratory Network offering their relevant infrastructures and services to the Consortium. Currently, 81 researchers as well as 27 associate groups and 16 associate external companies participate in SINFOTON2.

 

The relevant experience and research lines of the participant groups are the: design of high-power lasers, fibre optics based instrumentation, organic and welfare photonics, integrated optics and the multiple applications of liquid crystal technology. These abilities will jointly be applied for the development of new high impact solutions to, amongst others: monitoring of extreme temperatures in industrial contexts; sensing of strain, vibrations and impacts on trains and aircrafts; perimeter security, seismology and remote environmental sensing apart from assistive technologies for handicapped and elderly and pathogenic microbial detection.
