The intention is to develop new devices base on nanodoped potentially polimerisable liquid crystals (LC). LCs are intrinsically ordered on nanometre scale, and will serve as a matrix for the manufacturing of complex structures such as waveguides, lenses and nanostructured polymers. These structures will be targeted for the development of new active instruments and image forming devices.
Plasmon resonances in both metallic nano-spheres and geometrically well-defined dielectric nanoparticles are heavily susceptible to changes in the refractive index of surrounding media. In order to study the interaction between, potentially anisotropic, nano particles and electrically and optically anisotropic media, like the LC, a number of samples will be manufactured, with the expectation of being able to tune the plasmon resonances.
The same LC-nano particle hybrid structures will be employed in the development of tuneable lens arrays.
The following activities will be carried out:
